Hi All

I hope you’re enjoying this warmer weather. Apologies for the delay and I’ve skipped a couple of months as other things such as family and university work have taken priority, but we’re still keepin’ on keepin’ on.

Studio news!

I’ve joined Executive Council of the British Printing Society, which is a society for letterpress printers (and retired trade/commercial printers). I absolutely love this community of very experienced granddads and grandmothers and artisan letterpress printers and everything in-between. It’s been going for 80 years now and we need new faces. You don’t need to have a press or have years of experience, just an enthusiasm for letterpress printing. I’m thinking of setting up a Cumbrian network so if you’re interested, just email me! I’ll try to organise a meet-up either online or at my studio in June/July.

I’d like to say welcome to Market Place Print Studio in Cockermouth (https://marketplaceprintstudio.co.uk/)! Along with Printshare Ulverston, Cumbria Printmakers, Printfest, Rheged’s Great Print Exhibitions, I am succeeding in my aim to make Cumbria the county of printmakers! Print multiplies the joy.

Thanks to Anne Waggot-Knott for finding me a miniature vintage cigarette vending machine from which I am now selling mini-prints in the studio. No, I do not sell cigarettes.

Also to let you know I now have a Keencut mountcutter available to use in the studio. You bring your own mountboard, I train you up and Roberta’s your auntie. Open access rates/membership rates apply.

Courses at Linden Print Studio

Advance notice of a couple of very popular courses which book up very quickly. There’s still spaces on….

Mezzotint with Heather Young

Mezzotint was invented in the 17th century and used to create prints that were full of atmosphere and tone. Instead of working from white and adding black lines, this works in reverse, so you literally bring the image out of the darkness. Heather has been teaching at the studio for 4 years now and this is a wonderful introduction to this fascinating printmaking technique.

Saturday, 13 July 2024, 10.00-16.00

£85

Wood Engraving with Chris Daunt, two days

This two-day course will teach you how to create a detailed and visually rich wood engraving by one of the contemporary masters of the medium. Chris is the only block-maker left in the UK and has recently written a definitive guide to wood engraving The Art and Craft of Wood Engraving (Crowood Press).

Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 September 2023, 10.00-16.00

£160

Exhibitions

Reflections on Water, Cumbria Printmakers at Brantwood, until 19 May

Again, I’m supporting from the sidelines (not taking part) – but a great way to see what my fellow printmakers are up to.

Printfest 2-5 May https://printfest.uk/ - I’ll be there as a visitor and collector of prints, one day I’ll get round to applying…

And at the end of this month, at Linden Print Studio, Amy Story is exhibiting selected pieces of work from an ongoing self-directed project on the themes of Work / Purpose / Play. The work uses archive film footage, paper and digital collages and includes some interactive elements.

Amy Story, Work / Purpose / Play, Linden Print Studio, Sunday 28 April – 27 August

Not directly print-related but fascinating – Claude Cahun at Abbot Hall:

Best wishes, stay safe and hopefully see you soon in the Studio!
